Activities and Experiences Included

River Crossings
Between July and October, huge herds of wildebeest and zebra cross the Mara River on the border of Kenya and Tanzania, braving crocodiles and strong currents in one of nature’s most dramatic events.

Calving Season
From January to March the herds gather on the short-grass plains of the southern Serengeti and Ndutu, where thousands of calves are born each day, drawing lions, cheetahs and hyenas close.

Following the Herds
Our guides track the herds throughout the year and place you in camps close to the action, whether in the central Serengeti, the Western Corridor or the northern Serengeti and Masai Mara.

River Crossings
Between roughly July and October, the herds gather on the banks of the Mara River. Crossings are unpredictable, so we plan extra time in the area and position you at known crossing points for the best chance of seeing one.

Calving Season
From about January to March, hundreds of thousands of calves are born on the short-grass plains of the southern Serengeti and Ndutu, drawing lions, cheetahs and hyenas to the area.

Following the Herds
Mobile and seasonal camps move with the migration, so you can stay close to the action and spend more time with the herds instead of driving long distances each day.
Why Go on a Wildebeest Migration Safari
The Wildebeest Migration Safari gives an amazing chance to see one of Africa’s most spectacular wildlife shows in their natural habitat. About 1.5 million wildebeests migrate through the Serengeti and Maasai Mara in search of new grasslands, along with hundreds and thousands zebras and gazelles. June to October is the best time of year when you could see amazing river crossings and predator interactions, while January to March is best for calving and large concentrations of herd animals.
What is Involved in a Migration Safari
Planning a Wildebeest Migration Safari requires careful consideration of the animals’ seasonal movements. On your safari, you will usually start your day with an early-morning game drive, when wildlife is out and the surroundings are scenic. Professional guides know about the recent locations of the herds and select suitable places for observing wildlife. During the day, you might trace the migratory routes of these animals, observe the gathering of wildebeest in huge numbers, locate predators around and explore the surroundings of the plains and waterholes.
Where to Experience a Migration Safari
You can witness the Great Wildebeest Migration at some of Africa’s most famous locations, such as Serengeti National Park in Tanzania and Masai Mara Game Reserve in Kenya. Be there to watch millions of animals migrating together through the savanna grasslands in search of new pastures, watching spectacular Mara and Grumeti River crossings and interactions with predators. The herds move from the Northern to Central and Eastern Serengeti, Kenya’s Mara, and then to the Southern Serengeti, where, in the Ndutu region, they give birth to calves and gradually migrate toward the Northern plains.
