Visit Lake Natron
Explore the Alkaline Lake Natron
Located at the foot of Ol Doinyo Lengai, Lake Natron is a shallow, salt-water lake which is strikingly different from the other sweet-water lakes.
Animals don’t gather around Lake Natron to quench their thirst. With high concentrations of sodium and trona, the lake remains a thriving environment for halophilic organisms like cyanobacteria. The cyanobacteria’s red pigment produces deep red colours and adds a reddish tint to the lake water. The thriving blue algae make it a breeding ground for birds, especially flamingos. Thousands of birds are spotted near the lake.
