Activities and Experiences Included

Guided Forest Treks
Walk through the forests of Gombe and Mahale Mountains in western Tanzania with experienced rangers and trackers. Treks can last from one to several hours, depending on where the chimpanzee groups are feeding that day.

Chimpanzee Encounters
Once the chimpanzees are found, spend time quietly watching them groom, feed, play and call to one another. Visits are kept small and time-limited to protect the animals and give you an unforgettable close encounter.

Forest Wildlife
Along the trail you may see red colobus and red-tailed monkeys, forest birds and colourful butterflies. Between treks, relax on the quiet shores of Lake Tanganyika, one of the deepest and clearest lakes in the world.

Guided Forest Treks
Trackers set out early to locate the chimpanzees, then guide your group along forest paths that can be steep and muddy, so good walking shoes and moderate fitness are recommended.

Chimpanzee Encounters
Your time with the chimpanzees is limited to one hour. Guides will ask you to keep your distance, speak quietly and avoid flash photography so the animals stay relaxed.

Forest Wildlife
The forests are also home to baboons, blue monkeys and many forest birds, and the lakeshore offers beautiful sunsets after a day on the trails.
What is Chimpanzee Trekking in Africa
Chimpanzee Trekking is an immersive and guided wildlife experience that involves tracking and observing chimpanzees in their natural habitat. This wildlife tour focuses on tracing the trails of wild chimpanzees in protected mountain forests and learning how they live in their natural environment. Embarking on a chimpanzee habituation adventure is not just a journey; it’s a commitment to protect these endangered primates and our distant relatives.
Where to Go on a Chimpanzee Trekking
Chimpanzees are predominantly found in East African countries. Tanzania’s Mahale Mountain National Park and Rubondo Island National Park are the top destinations for wild chimpanzee trekking. Kibale Forest National Park, Murchison Falls National Park, and Queen Elizabeth National Park in Uganda have a high concentration of wild chimpanzee groups. Other places like Nyungwe Forest National Park in Rwanda and Odzala-Kokoua National Park in Congo are popular for chimpanzee trekking on less-crowded trails.
What is Included in a Chimpanzee Trekking
Chimpanzee trekking packages typically include the official trekking permit, expert ranger guides, and a regulated one-hour viewing window with the habituated chimpanzee troop. You’ll be accompanied from start to finish by experienced tour guides and wildlife safari experts. Park authorities provide a mandatory orientation on forest rules, along with specific health items such as face masks (to prevent transmitting human illnesses to the primates) and sometimes basic gaiters or walking sticks.

Frequently Asked Questions.
The best time for chimpanzee trekking is during the long dry season (June to September) and the short dry season (December to February). Trekking trails are generally drier and easier to hike during these periods.
Wear lightweight, comfortable clothing, sturdy hiking shoes, long trousers, and clothing suitable for changing forest conditions.
There’s a strict 60-minute rule for trekking and viewing chimpanzees up close: no touching, no food or toys, and no flash cameras, drone footage, or any other materials that could disturb the animals.
You must maintain a minimum distance of 7 to 10 meters (about 23 to 33 feet) from chimpanzees during a trek.
Children generally cannot go chimpanzee trekking unless they meet the official minimum age requirement, which is usually 12 years old in places like Kibale National Park in Uganda, though some operators or regions enforce a limit of 15 years old in Tanzania.
