Where to Go on a Desert Safari?

Desert safaris in Southern African regions are a popular form of tourism activity, different from bush safaris. The Namib Desert in Namibia is a top destination for desert safaris, where sandboarding is a popular activity. Internationally famous places like the Kalahari Desert in Botswana (Central Kalahari Game Reserve) are popular for desert safaris. The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, in the same Kalahari Desert bordering South Africa, offers raw, remote wilderness.

What to Do on a Desert Safari?

Desert safaris blend high-speed adventure with traditional culture, with open-air dining in dunes. Ride in a 4×4 vehicle suited to desert travel, especially for dune bashing. Enjoy quad biking, sandboarding, and occasional hot air balloon safaris. Enjoy barbecue dinner buffets, stargazing, and campfires. Track desert-adapted wildlife, join photography tours, visit indigenous communities, and immerse yourself in local cultures.

What Wildlife Can Be Seen on a Desert Safari?

Famous places like the Kalahari Desert have large lions with darker, black manes and longer legs to traverse sandy terrain. Oryx (Gemsbok) are recognisable by long, sharp horns and striking face markings. Meerkats of the Kalahari Desert are highly social and are often tracked as a wildlife-viewing activity. You can also spot brown hyenas, small desert cats, and lapped-faced vultures and ostriches on daytime desert game drives.
