Activities and Experiences Included

Kilimanjaro Climbs
Reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 metres, on a guided climb of five to nine days. Longer routes allow more time to acclimatise and give you a better chance of reaching the summit.

Mount Kenya Treks
Trek to Point Lenana at 4,985 metres, the highest summit on Mount Kenya that can be reached without technical climbing, passing glacial valleys, tarns and giant lobelias along the way.

Mount Meru Climbs
Climb Tanzania’s second-highest mountain in Arusha National Park over three to four days, walking with an armed ranger past buffalo, giraffe and colobus monkeys on the lower slopes.

Kilimanjaro Climbs
Choose between popular routes such as Machame, Lemosho, Marangu, Rongai and the Northern Circuit, each passing through five distinct climate zones from farmland and rainforest to the glaciers near the summit.

Mount Kenya Treks
The Sirimon, Chogoria and Naro Moru routes each offer something different, and combining them lets you cross the mountain and see its quieter, wilder side in four to six days.

Mount Meru Climbs
Mount Meru is a superb climb in its own right and a popular acclimatisation trek before Kilimanjaro, with sunrise views across the crater to Kilimanjaro from the summit ridge.
Why Go on a Mountain Trekking Tour
Mountain trekking in Africa takes you from tropical rainforest to snow and ice within a few days. Climbing Kilimanjaro, Mount Kenya or Mount Meru does not require technical mountaineering skills, yet every summit is a real achievement that tests your endurance and rewards you with views few people ever see. Along the way you walk through unique ecosystems, meet the mountain crews who make each climb possible, and share the experience with fellow trekkers from around the world.
What is Included in a Mountain Trekking Tour
A guided mountain trek normally includes park and climbing fees, licensed mountain guides, porters and a cook, all meals and safe drinking water on the mountain, and accommodation in tents or mountain huts depending on the route. Hotel nights before and after the climb, airport transfers and transport to the trailhead can also be arranged. Guides monitor your health every day and carry first aid supplies, so any signs of altitude sickness are dealt with quickly.
Where to Go Mountain Trekking in Africa
Tanzania is home to Mount Kilimanjaro, the world’s highest free-standing mountain at 5,895 metres, and Mount Meru at 4,566 metres in Arusha National Park. In Kenya, Mount Kenya rises to 5,199 metres, with trekkers heading for Point Lenana, while its rugged Batian and Nelion peaks are reserved for technical climbers. Each mountain can be combined with a wildlife safari or a beach stay in Zanzibar or on the Kenyan coast.

Frequently Asked Questions.
The best months are during the dry seasons, from January to early March and from June to October, when trails are drier and summit views are usually clearer. Climbing is possible at other times, but expect more rain on the lower slopes.
The trekking routes to Uhuru Peak, Point Lenana and the summit of Mount Meru do not require technical climbing skills, but you should be in good general health and able to walk for several hours a day on consecutive days. Practice hikes in the months before your trip make a big difference.
Choose a longer route with more days to acclimatise, walk slowly, drink plenty of water and tell your guide about any symptoms straight away. If symptoms become serious, the only reliable treatment is to descend, and your guide will make that call for your safety.
Kilimanjaro National Park sets a minimum age of 10 years for climbing to the summit. For other mountains and for younger travellers, contact us and we will advise on suitable routes and shorter treks.
Tell us which mountain you would like to climb, your preferred dates and your hiking experience, and we will recommend the best route and itinerary for you. Email us at care@safarizo.com or use our Plan Your Trip form to get started.
