What Type of Water Sports Are Chosen

For those looking to add more spice to their African adventure, water sports can be your perfect choice. East African destinations offer amazing opportunities to discover what lies beyond the shoreline and the fins or scales thriving in African waters. For freshwater, you can choose river rafting, kayaking, and boat races, while Mokoro rides and canoeing offer a more immersive experience. For marine water, popular activities include snorkelling, scuba diving, shark cage diving, and whale shark tracking, while overwater activities include surfing, swimming, dhow cruise racing, and speedboat racing.

Where to Do Water Sports in Africa

You can experience water sports across Africa, especially in East African safari destinations. Kenya’s Diani Beach is famous for kitesurfing, windsurfing, paddleboarding, snorkelling, and deep-sea fishing. Zanzibar in Tanzania offer snorkelling, scuba diving, whale shark tracking and dhow cruise riding. South Africa’s Cape Town is famous for surfing, kiteboarding, windsurfing, and seal or shark cage diving off the coast. You can also enjoy inland water-skiing and tubing on regional dams and lagoons.

What Animals/Marinelife Can Be Spotted

As you conduct kayaking and canoeing in Africa’s rivers, you may spot hippos, elephants, antelopes and varieties of water birds like Jacanas. Generally, crocodiles inhabit the waters, and areas near predator zones are not chosen for water sports. For marine water activities, you’ll see coral reefs, diverse marine species living around sea turtles, varieties of marine fish, whale sharks, and if you’re lucky, endangered dugongs (sea cows). You may also spot humpback whales from a safe distance during whale-tracking expeditions, and maybe even a pod of dolphins.
